On March 14th 2018 OCAofSD held their annual training class for new survivor volunteers who will now take part in the OCRFA Survivors Teaching Students and HEAR programs. Thank you again to our wonderful volunteers!

Wednesday, February 28th Survivors Teaching Students® (STS) – Palomar School of Nursing Presentation
Month of February ended with another OCRFA STS® presentation at Palomar School of Nursing. Please note in photo below of team members Cindy S. and Margaret G. with nursing students how many are wearing our Teal Steps 1K/5K Walk T-Shirts!!! Team member, Tina B. had to depart quickly after the presentation so missed out on the photo. Barbara H., Facilitator, who took photo reported, “The class went well, and many of the students and the instructor wore teal! Questions about how our families dealt with the news of diagnosis, how nurses can be most supportive.”
Thursday, February 22nd and Tuesday, February 27th – STS® Presentations at SWCCD School of Nursing
OCAofSD’s members are going strong with two STS® presentations at Southwestern College for School of Nursing in Otay Mesa. Our community outreach programs’ presentations reach from Oceanside to the Mexican Border in San Diego County! Our second OCRFA’s STS® presentation was for Instructor Sandra P’s class (shown in photo below with two of our team members, Cindy Silver and Carol R.) and the very large class of nursing students! Facilitator, Naomi Edelmuth took photo reporting “Very large engaged group with lots of them signing up to volunteer – yay!!
Wednesday, February 21st – HEAR™ Presentation to Soroptimist International North San Diego
Facilitator Cindy S. reports, “a great presentation and they were incredibly interactive as we shared our stories, and the information about symptoms and risk factors for early detection of ovarian cancer! At least two of the women shared that their moms had died from ovarian cancer. Others came up to us afterwards to talk one-on-one and we got more hugs then I could count! HEAR™ Presentation to Division 78, California Retired Teachers Association on February 18th
The HEAR™ community outreach program made a presentation to Division 78, California Retired Teachers Association on February 18th. It was a major success, and we thank them for their donation to OCAofSD!! Facilitator Cindy S. reports, “The audience was extremely attentive and took a lot of extra symptom cards to hand out to friends and family.”

Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge San Diego Chapter – February 8, 2018
The Ovarian Cancer Alliance of San Diego was honored to receive the San Diego Honor Plaque from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge San Diego Chapter for our compassion an dedication to advancing research and education for early diagnosis of ovarian cancer. This honor was received at the 48th Annual Awards Luncheon of the San Diego Chapter on February 8, 2018. The photo to the right is of the Board of Directors with two of our team members who attended the event.
